APPAREL REVIEW: The North Face Better Than Naked Singlet

IMG_20150805_164841773Let me begin my review of the Better Than Naked Singlet from The North Face by saying that I have never really been a fan of running in the summer months in New England. ‘It’s not the heat, it’s the humidity,’ as they say. I say, it’s both! But after the insanity of last winter and being forced to do too many long runs on the dreadmill due to lack of safe running routes, I vowed to change my tune, and decided to embrace summer running in spite of the steamy temperatures.

When winter hits and the thermometer drops below 20 degrees I always say that all you need is the right gear and you’re good to go for miles. So when the mercury heads north and the humidity is at 85% or higher, I apply the same logic – it’s all about the gear. And a singlet with the name Better Than Naked seemed like the most logical place to start.

btnsingThe first thing I noticed and loved at first touch was the light and soft feel of the fabric. It’s so light that you can barely feel it between your fingers. It is constructed with a high-tech moisture wicking blend of fibers that move sweat away from the skin and dry fast. It doesn’t cling to the body and is barely noticeable during movement.

The next thing I noticed and liked was how airy the back felt. The piece has a t-shaped cut and a section of even lighter mesh that runs down the lower back. The air flows freely through the material and it’s as if you have a portable fan following you around! This top was definitely constructed with performance in mind, with breathability and temperature regulation as its two main selling points.IMG_20150805_165027471

The shape is fitted, but not tight and doesn’t ride up mid-run. I chose the Dayglo Yellow color for maximum visibility on the roads, trails (hunting season is almost here) and the Cape Cod Rail Trail – which can be even more congested than the roads sometimes!

This top is definitely going to get me through the end of the summer – I’ve only taken a few days off since July and plan on keeping my mileage up through the last dog days of summer.

The Better Than Naked Singlet (MSRP $45.00) is available for men and women in all Marathon Sports locations [CLICK TO FIND A LOCATION NEAR YOU].
