SHOE REVIEW: Topo Magnifly

by Peter Nugent, Marathon Sports staff memberIMG_2735

I am all over the map with my footwear choices. As I am currently building my mileage for some long-distance races, I like to mix it up. I enjoy everything from the top of the line cushioning with Hoka down to an ultra lightweight, zero-drop Altra. One thing that is consistent across my footwear choices is a low heel-to-toe offset and a wide toebox allowing for full toe splay.

IMG_2738We haven’t carried Topo for very long – the company, which is based right here in Massachusetts, about 10 minutes from our headquarters, is young in the run specialty world. The company’s founder Tony Post, worked on the original Vibram 5-Fingers (those ‘toe shoes’ that took the running world by storm a few years ago). He left Vibram to start his own company: a footwear brand with a mission to develop gear ‘that amplifies your body’s amazing natural abilities.’ So Topo footwear is designed to help you perform at the highest level by providing shoes that encourage more efficient running form. With a low heel-to-toe offset and wide toe box, these shoes give you a nearly-barefoot experience. LEARN MORE ABOUT TONY POST AND Topo.

When asked to test out the new Topo Magnifly, I was thrilled! I currently own and run in their medium weight/medium cushion FlyLite and have run the shoe into the ground with nothing but good things to say about it.IMG_2726

The Magnifly takes Topo‘s typical low-offset lightweight experience to a new level with increased cushioning. This shoe stays consistent with Topo’s classic fit – a wide toebox and narrow heel that locks the foot in – and maintains a low offset with a 5mm heel to toe drop. This encourages a natural midfoot/forefoot strike, rather than a heel strike, which is inefficient and harder on the body.

I have taken the Magnifly on a variety of training runs. I’ve done two long runs in it (14 miles and 16 miles) and I enjoyed it the entire time. Topo has given this shoe dual-density cushioned foam to provide a soft (but not TOO soft) ride. They have strategically placed soft and firm zones throughout the midsole.

magThis shoe is a versatile training tool. I will continue wearing it on long runs but will also mix it into my gym work because of its sturdy midsole and wide toebox.

Topo footwear is available in men’s size 9-12 and women’s size 7-10 in Marathon Sports locations and online.
